چکیده

Social relationships such as friendship and partner choice are ruled by the proximity principle, which states that themore similar two individuals are, themore likely theywill become friends. However, proximity, similarity, and friendship are concepts with blurred edges and imprecise grades of membership. This study shows how to simulate these friendship dynamics in an agent-based model that applies fuzzy sets theory to implement agent attributes, rules, and social relationships, explaining the process in detail. Although in principle it may be thought that the use of fuzzy sets theorymakes agent-basedmodellingmore elaborated, in practice it saves themodeller from taking some arbitrary decisions on how to use crisp values for representing properties that are inherently fuzzy. The consequences of applying fuzzy sets and operations to define a fuzzy friendship relationship are compared with a simpler implementation, with crisp values. By integrating agent computational models and fuzzy set theory, this paper provides useful insights into scholars and practitioners to tackle the uncertainty inherent to social relationships in a systematic way.

Friends Forever: Social Relationships with a Fuzzy Agent-Based Model

Sociological research shows that friendship and partner choice tend to reveal a bias toward social similarity. These relations are ruled by the so called “proximity principle” which states that the more similar two individuals are, the more likely they will become friends. However, proximity, similarity or friendship are concepts with blurred edges and grades of membership (acquaintances, frien...

Introducing uncertainty into social simulation: using fuzzy logic for agent-based modelling

Agent based models are useful to study emergent behaviour in social systems. In general, existing agent models tend to be quite simple, but there are social problems that require the consideration of some aspects with uncertainty as human thinking does. Those characteristics can be addressed by using fuzzy sets theory in the specification of the attributes that describe agents representing indi...

Homophily, popularity and randomness: modelling growth of online social network

This work investigates how local preferences, social structural constraints and randomness might affect the development of the friendship network in Facebook. We do this by analyzing a snapshot Facebook dataset of Princeton University‟s students, and by building an agent-based simulation for comparison. Several different, but plausible, processes of friendship network development are proposed i...

Modelling the Dynamics of Human Resources Capacity in Health Care Services A Case Study of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital of Mashhad

Background: In service organizations such as hospitals, human resources (HR) play a key role in the quality of service delivery. Lack of a systemic attitude in terms of system dynamics, HR planning have been somewhat distant from reality. In order to solve such a problem, this study aimed to modeling the dynamics of human resources capacity management system in healthcare services.   Material...
